Search Tips Examples
Multiple Words When creating a search using multiple words, KidsOnline automatically suppplies "and" between each word; multiple words entered will all occur somewhere in the results, though not necessarily in the order entered. Both examples on the right will retrieve the same results.

fairy and tales

Whole Sentences You create a search using a whole sentence by enclosing the sentence in quotation marks. Words enclosed in double quotes will appear together in all results exactly as typed. "fairy tales"
Search Using Wildcards
The * Wildcard The asterisk ('*') matches up to five letters, beginning from wherever it is placed within the search word.
For example, "inter*" will match "internal" and "internet", but will not match "international".
The '*' wildcard can only be used after at least two letters.
The '*' wildcard may also be used inside a word. For example, "colo*r" would match both "color" and "colour".

The ** Wildcard The double-asterisk ('**') matches any number of letters, beginning from wherever it is placed within the search word.
For example, "inter**" will match all words that begin with "inter": "internal", "internet", and "international".
The '**' wildcard may also be used inside a word.
The ? Wildcard The question mark ('?') can be used to replace a single character anywhere within a word.
For example, wom?n will match both "woman" and "women".
Complex Searches
Boolean Operators Boolean Operators are code words that can be used to create specific groups of results. By using the code words AND or OR you can specify multiple words in any fields, grouped together in any order.
The code words AND NOT are used to exclude words. Select the operator you wish to use from the selection list.

Proximity Operators Proximity Operators are code words that allow you to retrieve results that contain your search words within specific words of one another. The code word NEAR is used to retrieve records that contain you search words or sentences within ten words of each other in the same searchable field.

The WITHIN operator is similar to the NEAR operator, but you are allowed to tell the search how many words that may appear between the specified search words.
